How It Works
Using Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) to Stimulate Healing
To aid the natural healing process, Orthofix’s osteogenesis (bone growth) stimulators create a low-strength pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), which helps increase the speed and completeness of bone healing.
The PEMF signal is produced from a coil built into a fabric garment that is worn over the fracture or fusion site. Published pre-clinical research shows that PEMF affects bone healing processes at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels.
At the cellular level, the PEMF signal activates growth pathways, which increases bone formation – both the cell population and the cell maturity. At the tissue level this leads to higher density bone with increased strength.
PEMF and the healing process

PEMF
Creates low-level electrical field
MOLECULAR
Activates signaling pathways
CELLULAR
Causes bone cells to perform work
TISSUE
Increases bone strength and qualityThe result of these molecular, cellular and tissue processes is improved healing rates of a nonunion fracture or fusion.
