Is bone growth stimulation right for you?

Footsteps

Doctors may prescribe bone growth stimulation for patients who are experiencing bone healing complications or exhibit risk factors that can impede healing. If you are concerned that your fracture or spinal fusion is not healing or if you have reason to believe that you have a risk factor that will make it difficult for you to heal, it is important to speak with your doctor, who can diagnose your condition and prescribe treatment.

Among others, physicians may prescribe a bone growth stimulator when a patient has poor bone healing. Common bone healing risk factors include:

  • Smoking/tobacco use
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Multilevel fusions

Talking with your insurance provider

Footsteps

Every insurance policy defines its terms of coverage for bone growth stimulation. To discuss coverage with your insurance company, we recommend that you become familiar with your individual policy terms and limitations. Orthofix is committed to assisting you in the verification of your insurance eligibility and benefit coverage.

If an insurance plan denies authorization or payment of a claim, it may be because they do not understand why the treatment is medically necessary and how it meets their criteria for coverage. Appealing your denial may be a worthwhile strategy, and Orthofix can help you navigate through this denial and appeal process.

You can get help by calling our Patient Services team at (800) 535-4492 or emailing them at patientservices@orthofix.com.

What to expect after bone growth stimulation is prescribed

If your doctor prescribes an Orthofix bone growth stimulator, an Orthofix representative will contact you to schedule an appointment – either at the doctor’s office or at your home to explain the benefits of the device, how it works, insurance requirements and to ensure that it is properly fitted.
